Between them, William McNab (1780-1848) and his son James (1810-1878) were in charge of the Horticulture Department at RBGE for almost 70 years between 1810 and 1878; James taking over on the death of his father.

According to RBGE Regius Keeper John Hutton Balfour, Inverleith House was uninhabitable in 1878 when he was required to move him and his family into it. It was damp, unsanitary and had mould growing on the walls – he even invited the Scottish Cryptogamic Society to identify some of the growths!

Botany was taught at the Garden to University of Edinburgh medical students; the Archives holds ledgers of students alongside their class roles and registers. Transcriptions of the matriculation books can be searched for students’ names and addresses between 1798 and 1919.
